Scauri

Audioguide about the place

Located in the southwest of the island, about 10 km from the center of Pantelleria, Scauri takes its name from the Sicilian term "Scauro," which means "landing place" or "harbor," probably due to the presence of the port on the coast. This locality, with a resident population of about 1000 inhabitants, called "Scavirioti," is divided into two areas: Scauri basso, the area that has developed around the port, where boats find easy shelter during north winds, and Scauri alto, about 100 m above sea level, an elevated area that includes the locations of Khassà, Zighidi, and Nica.

Given its location, spectacular sunsets can be admired, and on the horizon, beyond the blue line of crystal-clear sea, the African coast can be seen, just 70 kilometers away.

The harbor area is very popular, and in the restaurants, it is possible to enjoy dishes of local cuisine and spend musical evenings.

In the past, Scauri was also home to the Town Hall, the Carabinieri barracks, and even the prison.

In this district, there are two important caper factories and an olive mill. Near the main square, there is a pharmacy, a bakery, shops, the Primary School, social clubs, the oratory, and the only cinema on the island. Not far away is a sports facility much used and a playground for children built by the local community and maintained by it.

The patron saint of the district is San Gaetano, whose little church dates back to 1822. The Patron Saint is celebrated on August 7 with a procession and an evening of music and typical food in the main square, following the local tradition. In the past, during the festival, games were organized in the square, including tug-of-war, sack races, the greasy pole, and fiery pots, typical of the district.
The Church of San Gaetano is one of the three parishes on the island. It underwent several restorations until 1885, when it was elevated to parish status. A notable feature of the church is that it houses five altars: two on the right side and three on the left. Among the statues kept inside are those of San Gaetano, St. Joseph, the Immaculate Conception, and Our Lady of Sorrows. There is also a Crucifix, which, however, belongs to the Matrice Church. Finally, the bell tower contains four bells, cast in Recco in 1950.
