Bronze Age village

Sesi Archaeological Park

The village of Mursia and the relative monumental necropolis of "I Sesi", dating from between 1800 and 1450 BC, constitute one of the most important and best preserved archaeological complexes in the central Mediterranean. The extension of the inhabited area of about 1 hectare, the mighty and monumental fortification wall and the large tumulus tombs are the testimony of a complex society which characterized the population of the island and which became part of the system of relationships and trade between East and West in the 2nd millennium BC.

Today it is possible to visit the village by walking along the outside of the fortification wall which has the face still admirably preserved.

Excavations have brought to light different sectors of the village with oval huts, often with an elongated plan with rounded short sides, a shape that has been related to the shape of the boats that were in use in the second millennium.

The huts have an average surface area of about 25-30 m2 and correspond to the family units that made up the village community.

Today we can estimate that the community of Mursia was made up of around 300-400 individuals.

The investigations recently carried out by the University of Bologna and the Suor Orsola Benincasa University of Naples, coordinated by the late Sebastiano Tusa, have brought to light the details of daily life: Hearths and cooking plates for preparing food , numerous ceramic vessels for the storage and consumption of various products, tools for spinning and textile production, bone, obsidian and metal working tools. The finds found in the excavations can be appreciated by visiting the Prehistory room at the Punta Spadillo Volcanological Museum. Thanks to the collaboration of various archaeobotany scholars and specialists, today we can state that the community of Mursia cultivated cereals and legumes, raised goats and sheep, cattle and pigs and fished along the coasts. It had a rich availability of resources, including water that was extracted from the "buvire", fresh water springs, which are still found today under the village near the coast. The exceptional discovery of some finds shows that the community of Mursia was not closed and isolated: ceramics and flint tools indicate constant relations with Sicily, but above all the ivory bracelets and glass beads indicate relations with those who sailed in the Mediterranean coming from Egypt, Cyprus or the coasts of Syria.

An abundant metallurgical production is evidenced by the discovery of over 30 stone matrices for melting tools, mainly flat axes, in bronze.
