The volcanic complex of Gelfisér is a collapsed lava dome characterized by extensive trachytic and pantelleritic lava flows dating back to approximately 20,000 years ago, with an impressive monolith at the center of the eruptive area.
The length of the lava flows decreases with stratigraphic height; in the case of the Gelfisér dome, the longest flows reach about 2 km from the emission point. The upper part of the sequence consists of lava flows that have traveled short distances, forming a cone with very steep flanks. In the case of the Gelfisér dome, these flanks are mainly oriented towards the west. In the final stages of its growth, the mountain underwent lateral collapses and subsequent extrusions of lava flows.
