The Castle of Pantelleria, also known as "Castello Barbacane", is one of the oldest architectural works on the island. Its construction dates back to the Byzantine period around 540 AD, but was subsequently expanded and modified during Norman domination in the 12th century.

During the Middle Ages, the castle was involved in numerous historical events, including pirate attacks and feudal disputes. In 1127, the Normans landed on the island and began construction of the donjon, followed by the construction of the circular tower and other structural additions over the following centuries.

During Spanish rule, the castle was used as a prison and underwent further structural changes. In 1734, the Bourbons took over the island and made further changes, including the addition of a rectangular tower above the existing circular tower.

During the Second World War, the castle was used as the headquarters of the maritime artillery militia command and suffered damage during bombing. After the war, some parts of the castle were demolished to allow the construction of via Borgo Italia.

Currently, the castle has been restored and is home to a regional archaeological museum. Made mainly with lava stone and lime, the castle features architraves made of worked stone blocks, barrel vaults and domes in the oldest parts such as the circular tower.

The Castle of Pantelleria represents not only an important historical site, but also a point of cultural and tourist interest for the island, witness to centuries of history and transformations.
