Grotta Di Sataria

The Sataria Cave is a large natural cavity, known for its charm and the legends that surround it. Inside, thermal springs flow at around 40°C, representing manifestations of Pantelleria’s secondary volcanic activity. The name, of Greek origin and associated with the concept of “health,” likely dates back to the Byzantine period. The cave’s waters have been renowned since ancient times for their healing properties, particularly in treating rheumatism and arthritis.

According to legend, Pantelleria may be the ancient Ogygia described by Homer in the Odyssey—the remote island where the nymph Calypso kept Ulysses for seven years. Pantelleria’s central location in the Mediterranean, its volcanic and fertile nature, dense vegetation, and the presence of a large seaside cave with thermal springs support this intriguing theory. Sataria Cave, located on the island’s southwestern coast, is traditionally identified as the possible site of Ulysses and Calypso’s legendary meeting.
